Cornea

Introduction

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped outermost layer at the front of the eye. It covers the iris and pupil and plays an important role in focusing light onto the retina. Because the cornea has a high refractive power, its shape, transparency, and health are essential for clear vision. For optometry students, understanding the anatomy, functions, and common disorders of the cornea is important for performing comprehensive eye examinations and identifying conditions that require clinical management.

Anatomy of the Cornea

The cornea consists of five main layers: epithelium, Bowman’s layer, stroma, Descemet’s membrane, and endothelium. Each layer has a specific role in maintaining corneal structure and transparency.

Function of the Retina

The cornea protects the internal structures of the eye and provides most of the eye’s refractive power. Its smooth and transparent surface allows light to enter and focus properly.

Corneal Health and Disorders

Common corneal conditions include keratitis, corneal ulcer, corneal abrasion, keratoconus, and corneal edema. Recognizing their signs and symptoms is important during clinical examination.

Corneal Examination

Optometrists assess the cornea using techniques and instruments such as slit-lamp examination, fluorescein staining, keratometry, and corneal topography to evaluate its structure, curvature, and health.
